Muscle Cars Are Back!

Those of us that remember the cars of the 1960s and 70s think of a muscle car having a large V8 and rear wheel drive. This gave those magnificent old cars great acceleration. There are a number of muscle cars out on the road today, including beautiful restored versions of those old cars, and a number of new cars that give great performance. Let's look at a few of the choices if you're considering getting a muscle car anytime in the near future. Even if you aren't going to buy one, dream a little and look up pictures of your favorite past or present muscle car.

Let's start with one of the companies that made several great old muscle cars, Dodge. Looking through classic car directories will give two of the favorite old cars from this company, the Challenger and the Charger. The Mercury Cougar is also a sought after muscle car from that era, as are the Chevy Impala, and the Camaro. Some of these names may not be familiar anymore, but the Impala and the Camaro have been manufactured for many years after their heyday. Plymouth has made some highly sought after classic cars, the Barracuda and especially the Duster. And of course, who could forget the GTO. You may be surprised to look up the value of some of these cars on the Internet, even those in "needing to be restored" condition. A complete Duster (one with all the original major parts) can be a substantial addition to anyone's yearly paycheck.

Yet with current gas prices Americans are still in love with fast and beautiful cars. Let's let's look at several of the traditional muscle cars, and then a few interesting current ones. Lets start with the Mustang Mach 1. It looks like something out of an old Steve McQueen movie, with a scoop, body stripes, and a wing spoiler. The seats are black leather, and the odometer goes up to 150 miles an hour. This car compares favorably in style with the old Mustangs, and the performance of these cars is great when you're behind the wheel.

Chrysler, or DaimlerChrysler, again catches interest by using rear wheel drive and a Hemi V-8 engine. Its 300 series can go from zero to 100 in about seven seconds or so. Even though some of these cars do not have the styling of some classic muscle cars, they do have a lot of power and acceleration. Also, this company produces Mercedes-Benz, and a few of their models will travel more than 200 mph without any discomfort. Even if these cars might be beyond the average person's price range, a test drive in one of them is truly memorable. The faster Mercedes-Benzes go for upwards of 0,000.

Now, for the car that has turned heads for many years now, the Corvette. It is as eye-catching as ever, and it remains a powerful and tight handling sports car. The car itself is lighter than some of the more classic models and the suspension has been improved to make a smoother ride. If you remember the Stingray from years ago, the new Corvette will remind you of that. The group of Corvette owners are very particular about their cars, and prefer that the line stays recognizable both in style and in performance. These cars are also much more affordable, in the range of ,000 for a memorable and powerful car.

Finally, you might consider Cadillac as a choice when looking at a powerful, smooth riding car. Cadillac now makes two seaters with rear wheel drive and a comfortable ride. The ride in this car is very different than in the classic Corvette, but for those accustomed to softer suspension this may be a great choice for a powerful car.

Muscle cars are back! Some companies have kept the classic styling over these last 30 years, and others have introduced new powerful, and beautiful cars. Give yourself a treat and go down and try one out at your local car dealer.
